Patient’s blood-derived biomaterial (PRF)
When extracting an infected tooth and/or placing a ceramic implant immediately after extraction, Dr. Olivia Hart of Virginia Biological Dentistry, Glen Allen, Virginia, follows standard biological protocol, including using platelet-rich fibrin, known as PRF.
This is a special bio-enriched membrane packed with natural growth factors. PRF is derived from the patient’s own blood, drawn during the surgery, that is subsequently centrifuged in a special machine in our biological office to create a natural biomaterial membrane.
Growth factors present in PRF stimulate and attract stem cells to the site of injury, promoting cell mitosis and good cell regeneration. PRF acts as a bioactive material, while the growth factors in PRF are responsible for blood vessel growth, cell mitosis, increasing collagen production, and recruitment of other good cells that migrate to the site of injury and help with faster and better healing. Furthermore, PRF can be used alone or in combination with bone grafts.
In that sense, PRF is a healing biomaterial with great potential for soft tissue repair and regeneration and bone growth without inflammatory reactions. (See Borie, Olivi, Orsi, Garlet, Weber, Beltran, and Fuentes, Platelet-rich fibrin application in dentistry: a literature review, In International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, 2015; 8; 5.)
PRF technique that Dr. Hart perfected is a natural and minimally invasive technique with low risks and satisfactory clinical outcomes to ensure better and faster healing for our patients.
With the use of PRF in your treatment, you may benefit from the following:
- A simple, efficient, and fast procedure
- A completely natural process with reduced risk of immunological reactions
- Minimally invasive technique
- Reduced discomfort during healing
- Increased healing rate
- Minimized manipulation of blood
- Use of autologous samples, hence reduced complications
- Activity retained for a longer period with effective tissue regeneration
Treatment using PRF may be best for those seeking a minimally invasive and natural treatment option.
