Trips to the dentist have long been known to cause anxiety, fear, and trepidation in many patients. This fear stems from previous experiences, anxiety over the unknown, several impending large procedures, a strong gag reflex, or myriad unknown factors. Regardless of the reason, sedation dentistry is widely trusted and proven to help patients feel more relaxed during their procedures. Dr. Hart is happy to offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation, ensuring patients get the care they deserve.
The use of nitrous oxide, often referred to as laughing gas, is an inhaled minimal sedation. The patient is given the gas along with oxygen through a mask placed over the nose. The amount of sedation is controlled by Dr. Hart, and wears off quickly once the mask is removed. Most patients report pleasant euphoric feelings that easily distract from the procedure.
Nitrous oxide is administered at the start of treatment and works almost immediately to relieve anxiety. Afterward, patients will not feel groggy or “drugged” and are able to drive themselves home. Nitrous oxide gas is considered safe for children and may be used when the child refuses to cooperate or is afraid of the dentist.
While nitrous oxide is a safe way to combat dental anxiety, you may experience some side effects. These are rare and usually mild. Talk to Dr. Hart if you feel nausea, dizziness, vertigo, or are experiencing hallucinations. They are usually a sign of over-sedation and can be quickly eliminated by modifying the amount of sedation.
Virginia Biological Dentistry also offers pre-sedation or oral conscious sedation. Patients who are exceptionally anxious or undergoing extensive dental work may want to explore this option. Pre-sedation requires transportation to and from the appointment.
Don’t let a paralyzing fear of the dentist compromise your oral health. Dr. Hart and her team care about providing a comfortable and relaxing environment for all your dental services. In addition, new patients receive an oral cancer screening. Call today to set up an appointment and find out if sedation dentistry is right for you.
