You’ve probably heard the expressions “it was like pulling teeth” or “I’d rather have a root canal” to describe unpleasant or difficult situations. Most people understand the importance of scheduling regular visits to the dentist for optimal oral and overall health. But it’s estimated up to 20% of Americans avoid professional dental care due to dental anxiety. Studies show fear of pain, injections, anesthesia, feelings of lack of control, or concern about lack of personal space is to blame for this neglect of oral care.
At Virginia Biological Dentistry, serving Glen Allen, Charlottesville, and neighboring communities in Virginia, Dr. Olivia Hart emphasizes family-friendly, gentle, and biological dental care to ensure patients’ ultimate comfort, convenience, and outcomes. Biological dentistry embraces the philosophy that oral health is intricately connected to physical, emotional, and systemic health. Dr. Olivia Hart is committed to using only the safest materials in dental procedures and taking a conservative approach to treatment with the patient’s long-term wellness in mind.
For patients who have experienced dental anxiety or just want to care for their teeth with minimal discomfort, Virginia Biological Dentistry is pleased to offer sedation dentistry.
Our practice provides two forms of sedation dentistry:
Oral conscious sedation, as the name implies, allows the patient to be fully conscious while feeling relaxed and comfortable. A prescription medication is taken by mouth before the dental appointment. Patients must arrange transportation to and from the office, but will be comfortable and calm for longer procedures. After a short rest following the procedure, patients often have little recollection of the procedure.
Traditionally referred to as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a comfortable mask to alleviate anxiety and induce a carefree sensation. Patients remain conscious and awake, although they may relax enough to nap during a procedure. With nitrous oxide, patients are able to drive themselves to and from the dental office. The gas takes effect quickly, with no adverse indications, and is resolved immediately following the procedure with no grogginess.
After a thorough consultation, Dr. Hart tailors a treatment plan to each patient, including recommendations for the best sedation options. For more information, contact us today at (804) 381-6238.
