Orthodontic treatment has come a long way in recent years. One of the most exciting technologies is the introduction of clear braces systems. At Glen Allen Family Dental, we offer patients in the Glen Allen and Charlottesville areas the Invisalign system as an alternative to conventional metal braces.
The Invisalign system is designed to quickly and efficiently move teeth into proper alignment. The process involves a series of clear aligner trays. Made from BPA-free plastic, the aligner trays are comfortable and have a customized fit designed to place pressure on the teeth and gradually shift them into the right place. Trays are swapped out every two weeks, and most treatments are completed within about eighteen months. During the initial consultations for Invisalign, we take photos of both arches of teeth to create a 3D model. We then use this model to precisely project the movement of the teeth and design each set of trays. With this 3D model we are also able to illustrate what the end results will look like.
Invisalign offers patients a number of benefits.
- Gentle and consistent force to move teeth that is almost unnoticed to the patient. With conventional braces, tightening appointments are needed to make adjustments to the braces. With Invisalign, patients simply swap out their old tray every two weeks.
- Removable trays allow patients to continue to enjoy their favorite foods. In the past, braces always came with a long list of “off limits” foods. This is no longer the case. The trays are simply removed for eating and then put back in place after the patient brushes his or her teeth.
- Trays are discreet and virtually undetectable. This takes away a lot of the stigma or embarrassment that comes with braces, especially for older adults.
- Improved oral hygiene. Patients are able to remove the trays to effectively brush and floss teeth, cutting down on the risk of tooth decay.
