Every year, there are thousands of patients who choose to not the visit the dentist out of fear or anxiety. This could be because of a painful experience in the past, the potential for lengthy procedures, or simply the fear of the unknown. Regardless of the cause of your anxiety, there is a solution. At Virginia Biological Dentistry, we offer sedation dentistry to help our patients who are facing extensive dental work have a calm and relaxing experience.
Candidates for sedation dentistry may have one or more of the following issues:
During your initial appointment, we will perform a comprehensive examination that includes a medical history and evaluation of any dental issues. At this point, we will go over your options for sedation dentistry. For patients facing multiple procedures, or lengthy treatments, oral conscious sedation may be recommended. Oral conscious sedation not only allows more dental work to be performed in a single appointment, it also helps ensure the patients muscles are relaxed, cutting down on treatment fatigue and improving recovery time.
If you decided to have oral conscious sedation, you will need to arrange transportation to and from our office on the day of your treatment. Prior to arriving at the office, you will take a prescribed medication as directed by our team. Once you arrive, you will already begin to feel relaxed and comfortable as you are brought back to the treatment area. Most patients report that conscious sedation makes them feel like they are drifting off to sleep. You will not be unconscious during your procedure, although the majority of patients have little to no memory of it.
Patient comfort is one of the most important ways to make sure that people stay proactive about their oral health. In addition to oral conscious sedation, we offer nitrous oxide for patients who may only be mildly anxious or fearful about the dentist.
