Modern dentistry has made many great advances in how we treat patients. Our office is what we would call a no-Mercury zone, which means we do not perform silver amalgam fillings. These fillings are one of the ways dentists use to “fill” in the hole left by cavities. We believe, however, that Mercury should be nowhere near the human body when it has the potential to be hazardous to health.
To reach the bacteria that cause the cavities in the first place, most dentists use a drill. This can make some of our more anxious patients uncomfortable. At our practice, we offer air abrasion services as an alternative to drilling. The way in which air abrasion works is that a stream of air is mixed with silica, aluminum oxide, or a baking soda mixture that works to chip away at the infected area of the tooth. A tube is then used to suction up the bacteria. This method does not produce any heat, does not affect the surrounding healthy parts of the tooth, and decreases the chance of a fractured tooth. However, if the cavity is large in size or is not in an area the dentist can reach through the enamel, then the traditional drilling method will have to be used.
